Located on the Indian Ocean coast, Dar es
Salaam is home to 3.5 million people.Of main interest are the game reserves
and national parks, which are a good distance from Dar es Salaam and require
full-day or overnight excursions.
Shopping
A small shopping arcade at Oyster Bay Hotel (30 minutes from the town
center) offers a variety of souvenir items. Tanzanite, mined in
Tanzania, is a mineral used as a gemstone and crafted into attractive
jewelry. A selection of craft items and wood carvings can be found in
the House of Crafts next to the Sheraton Hotel. Especially noteworthy
are the Tinga Tinga paintings; an extensive selection can be found at
the Tinga Tinga Center (30 minutes from the city). Few local
establishments accept U.S. dollars; credit cards are only accepted at
major hotel shops. Cuisine
Barbecued meat has taken over in a big way. Traditional local dishes
based on seafood are also worth a try, as is Indian cuisine.
Please Note: As in all third world countries, eating ashore
requires caution. Only the best restaurants or hotels should be
considered. Don’t eat any raw vegetables or uncooked food; drink only
bottled beverages.
Other Sights
Lutheran Cathedral.
Construction began in 1898. The church
stands out with its distinctive red-tiled spire and tiled canopies over
the windows to provide shade. Just behind it stands the New Africa
Hotel.
Oyster Bay. Once the main European residential area during
the colonial era, it is today the location of many foreign embassies.
The Slipway. About a 30-minute drive from the city, The
Slipway complex features restaurants and a variety of shops, including
an art gallery and a Tanzanite jewelry shop.

precaution, it is recommended not to wear expensive jewelry and watches,
or carry large amounts of cash ashore with you. |
